A patent is a monopoly awarded to the owner of a new and previously undisclosed invention. It has a life span of about 20 years, and affords the owner the right to exclude others from making, using or selling the invention without permission. In a highly competitive, capital intensive R&D driven industry, patents are critically important in ensuring that owners and investors obtain their well-deserved financial returns.
Patents are awarded by individual governments, on a country basis and are geographically limited as to their scope. Patents give rights only in those countries in which they are legally granted.
